Blue on Gold

BLUE ON GOLD

The Blue on Gold series began with a simple search to find the right blue. A blue whose luminescence would perfectly offset the incandescence of gold. This seemingly simple task quickly became an all consuming puzzle that would eventually, after many palette tests and hundreds of discarded strips of canvas, lead to six portrait studies where that balance was finally struck. This core concept and the characters depicted are all formative components in a current body of work, which will further what's been discovered here in Blue on Gold on a larger scale.

The series was painted in three disparate locations. Two painted in Mouraria, the old Moorish quarter of Lisbon, another two in the Dutch Heuvelrug forest and the final two on Europe's most westerly point, The Blasket Islands off the west coast of Ireland.
